Supporting Friends in Pain: What They Really Need

When someone you love is struggling, it’s natural to want to fix it. But what if the most powerful thing you can do for a struggling friend doesn’t involve advice at all? It can be possible to support a friend in pain.

You want to help. You want to make it better.

But no matter how well-intentioned your advice is, it can sometimes fall flat—or worse, push them away.

If you’ve ever walked away from a conversation thinking, “Did I say the wrong thing?” you’re not alone.

In this episode of Lucinda’s Insights, we’ll explore why your instinct to “fix it” might not be what your friend actually needs—and what to do instead. We’ll look at what neuroscience tells us about emotional pain, why feeling seen is more healing than most people realize, and how to support someone without overwhelming them (or yourself).

If you’ve ever wondered how to show up for someone in a way that truly helps, this one’s for you.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode on how supporting friends in pain can be attainable:

  • Why offering advice sometimes backfires (even if it’s good)
  • The science behind why emotional pain feels isolating
  • 3 things you can say that actually bring comfort
  • A small act of support that makes a big difference

In the episode, I talk about a concept called co-regulation—the way our nervous systems sync with others. When someone’s in pain, our calm presence can literally help soothe their brain.

Holding space means letting someone feel without rushing to remove the feeling.

I also share what not to say—like the classic ‘At least…’ which, while well-intentioned, often leaves the other person feeling dismissed or unseen. Instead, I’ll give you simple, compassionate phrases you can say when you don’t know what to say. These are the kinds of words that help someone feel emotionally held—not fixed, not rushed, just genuinely supported in their pain.
